Rutgers University: A Camden Superhero
Brief Summary
Maybe there needs to be a Camden superhero. Lucky for Camden, Ryan Brady, a Rutgers-Camden alum, is on the case.
Overview
Rutgers University-Camden regularly features, through print and digital communications, alumni stories to engage prospective, current, and past students. These stories highlight the breadth of opportunities that stem after completing a degree at Rutgers. Working on the communications team, I identified Ryan Brady as a possible video story, based on the illustrative nature of his work. After interviewing Ryan and capturing b-roll and photos of his work, I carefully crafted a video that brought his illustrations to life. Based on the success of his video, I was asked to use my writing skills to write a companion article for the Fall 2019 Rutgers-Camden magazine, which circulates to alumni across the country.
My Role
Producer, Editor, Shooter, and Writer
The Challenge
How can you highlight the work of an alum when it doesn’t relate to what he does professionally?
The Process
The communications team kept a running list of local alumni to highlight for various projects. After a quick google search on Ryan, I reached out to a colleague who is connected to him through the annual ComicCon festival at Rutgers. Once I connected with Ryan, I followed my standard production timeline of a pre-production interview, drafted interview questions, and scheduled his shoot. After completing his interview, I shot b-roll and photos in an art lab on campus. During editing was when the story came to life. Using image progressions Ryan provided, I brought his characters to life. I wanted the viewer to feel as if they were in a superhero movie, so I used dramatic music, a comic book font, and quick zoom transitions. When writing the article, I didn’t want to just repeat the content of the video, so I pulled a slightly different focus to create a balance in content.
The Solution
A social-media friendly 2:30 video and article for Rutgers-Camden magazine. To address the challenge I faced, I focused the story on the local inspiration he drew on during his time at Rutgers and how he pulled storylines from his day job into his comics.
Impact
The video and article were well-received by alumni, current students, and staff across the university. The video gained Ryan local recognition and the article created a splash in the magazine.
