Data Visualization: What can I get you to drink?
Brief Summary
If you’re building a bar at home, how do you avoid having to stock everything but the kitchen sink?
Overview
While we may each have our own favorite cocktail or two, when you’re building your home bar, it’s nice to be prepared for the tastes of your friends, too. This project, for Temple University’s Strategic Advertising and Marketing Master’s program, aimed to help consumers stock their bar without having to purchase everything at the local liquor store.
My Role
Research and design
The Challenge
How do you tell a compelling visual story through charts without overwhelming the viewer?
The Process
Once I selected a topic for my project, I started by finding lists of the top cocktails in America. The top 50 cocktails of 2019 was published in Business Insider, and I transferred that data list into an Excel file. I then used Kaggle to find data spreadsheets for cocktail ingredients. Once I merged that sheet with the cocktail list, I filled in any missing ingredient data. The ingredients were split by primary liquor and additional ingredients. I wanted this data viz to be both helpful and affordable, so I decided to select the most popular liquor, gin, and then highlight the most popular liqueurs and add-ins to make the most popular gin drinks. To enhance my visual, I also included the barware most commonly used in gin drinks. I didn’t want the viewer to be overwhelmed with options or charts, so I relied on iconography and a color scheme that had a nod to mid century modern, a time period well-known for cocktails.
The Solution
A clean, mid century modern inspired data viz that answers the question, “What can I get you to drink?” The answer? A gin cocktail served in a coupe glass, that is likely full of lemon and simple syrup.
Impact
The data viz was well-received by my professor and peers, and was published to Tableau Public.
